Too close for comfort
It was a beautiful spring day. The trees were blooming and the breeze had the first hint of warmth. To enjoy the fresh air my eight-year old daughter, our little corgi dog, and I went out for a walk in our neighborhood.
Hannah, my daughter, was on roller skates. She was gripped to my left arm as she rolled in fits and starts. My right hand held Fred, the dog’s leash.
The neighborhood was gentrifying. Between the old bungalows new houses and apartments were springing up. We stopped to say “hi” to a neighbor and observe all the activity going on around us. As we continued our walk I could hear a car coming up behind us.
I thought nothing of it as we were turning the corner in a couple of steps. We turned onto the sidewalk and walked past an old storefront turned new apartment office. We could hear the apartment construction behind the 12-foot wooden fence obstructing our view. The fence came right up to the sidewalk causing our little threesome to squeeze in tight.
Gut reaction
As I reigned Fred in and pulled Hannah to my side I received the first pang in my belly. My body went on high alert. Nothing was going on in front of us or beside us. With the split second thought that I needed to look behind me, the hair on my neck stood up.
I glanced over my shoulder and saw a car about 50 feet back moving slow. My whole being knew that we were in danger and if we stayed where we were something bad was going to happen.
Run for our lives
In a flash, I bent down and picked up Fred and got behind Hannah. I pushed her into the street and full on sprinted across the two lanes. Behind me, the car shot forward with tires screeching and the engine roaring. I felt as if a bomb was about to explode.
I yelled to my daughter to roll up the old driveway leading to a vacant field and get behind the telephone pole. She made it. Fred and I followed as I felt a rush of air and an explosion. The car hit the pole. I looked into the driver’s eyes and saw pure evil.
The pole held and the car reversed as Hannah roller skated for her life and I ran for mine and Fred’s. Hannah turned into the next driveway and hid in the entryway of the house. I was right at her heels.
The car careened toward the the house, hopped the curb, and screeched to a halt half in the yard and half in the street. The madman sat in his car gunning his hissing engine staring at us.
Saved
Thankfully, a car came down the street. The madman looked at the car gave us an evil glance and backed his car off the yard, down the curb and squealed off. On hyper alert I got his license number off the back plate.
Shaking and crying Hannah and I walked home with Fred trailing behind us. Once safely home I called 911.
Two policemen arrived and took our report, a detailed description of the vehicle, and the license number. A few hours later a police officer called to caution us against going for walks in our neighborhood.
The man that attacked us was just out of prison. He’d been serving a sentence for vehicular manslaughter.
My intuition sensed danger and saved our lives. I know if I hadn’t listened to my gut the madman would have squished us into the construction wall like bugs. There is no doubt in my mind that we would be dead.

Michelle! I’m so glad you and Hannah made it through that insanity! It’s hard for me to imagine such a sinister force in someone. Wow!! You had more of a story to write, you needed to come into and impact my life and countless others.
Hugs and love, Joe

I’m happy we lived through that scary moment as well. Yes, the man was insane. The police recommended we not press charges because the madman would have our home address and could come hunt us down. CRAZY!
Doing my twists helped save my life!! Thank you intuition!

That’s crazy! So glad y’all are ok. Horrible that the police just let that guy off because of fear of retaliation. Wonder who’s son he was, ha! Love you and Hannah!!

Very CRAZY experience. And yes — we were scared so we didn’t want to file charges because that madman would have our address. I hope he didn’t kill or hurt anyone else. Love you and Hannah too!!
